H. H. Johnson

(Kalamazoo, MI?), c. 1930s, 16". This bulk vendor is made of aluminum. It's listed as 'rare' and I've seen only one other example in person. That one was at the Stan Harris auction in 1995, and it had the coin insert on the right side as does the example pictured in Silent Salesmen Too. They may have been the same machine. I can't specifically recall seeing or hearing about any other H. H. Johnson, but I have this vague background sense that I may have possibly perhaps heard about another one or two examples fifth- or sixth-hand. Silent Salesmen Too implies that several exist, some with "H. H. Johnson" embossed on the bottom, which mine doesn't have. This model---or at least this example of the model---locks via a reverse-threaded nut as do Bluebirds, so I doubt it was left outside much.

The H. H. Johnson's sibling model, the Doty-Runnels, is here if you care to look and inspect.

This example is 100% original except maybe---just maybe---the globe. Relative to the machine's base, the globe's corners are more rounded and therefore less form-fitting than I'd have expected. I'm being very picky here; it could be 100% correct but I've always wondered. Regardless, it fits well and is old glass.
